Saltwater Fishing in Gulf Shores & Orange Beach, AL GULFCOASTGAMEFISH.COM Read about saltwater fishing and use all the resources for your best chance to catch a lot of fish in Gulf Shores & Orange Beach, AL HOOKS One of the most important choices you will make is what hook to use. J hooks, circle hooks, khale hooks, O'Shaugnhessy, treble, on and on the list goes. Just like anything else, keep it simple. Circle hooks are gaining popularity because of their ability to get more easily releasable hook sets, but j hooks works fine if that's what you have. Treble hooks work good for ensuring a hook-up with some live bait but can really damage a fish you plan to release. |

The next consideration is size. I have caught some large speckled trout and redfish on nothing but a number 4 hook (which is relatively small) and a Love's minnow. Even though this is possible, staying around a #1 size hook will put you in position to catch more fish. If going after a particular species, say sheephead, they have smaller mouths so a #2-#4 hook works best. Along that line, if you are planning on fishing with live pinfish or croaker for that wall hanging trophy, a #2/0 or larger will be needed. Hook Sizes: Consider hook sizes as scale with #1 in the middle. As the number increases and is a single digit the hooks get smaller (2,4,6). Zeros are added behind increasing numbers as the hook size increases (1/0,2/0,4/0). Most often for inshore fishing a 2/0 hook will be the largest you should need. Treble Hooks are popular with lots of anglers thanks to their superior ability to keep a fish hooked. It is hard to miss the mouth of a fish when you're chances are increased 300%. Most treble hooks are found on plugs like Mirro Lures or Rapalas. Treble hooks also show up in live bait fishing. Know the local rules when fishing this way. Hook a bull minnow with a #4 treble hook with one hook coming up through the bottom of the bait's lips. The other two hooks almost look like a brush guard in front. This is a dynamite flounder rig. To get the bait on the bottom, a 10-12 inch leader with an egg sinker (size depends on current and water depth, anywhere from 1/4oz to 1oz usually is good) above the leader, treble hook version of the Carolina rig. |
